SIERRA LEONE

How little they know about you Sierra Leone.
The country a beautiful girl I knew, once called her home.

How little they know about your rare pink skies. How unbeknown to them that on these very beaches death brought divided people together to lie.

How little they know about your white sands and turquoise waters. How innocent children turned ruthless child soldiers were torn away from their fathers and mothers.

How little they know about your beautiful women. How they know nothing of your deeply rooted history. How a country full of natural wealth can be so economically poor is still a mystery.

A country no stranger to religious tolerance.
A country filled with third world royals.
How little they know that the birthplace of most diamonds are found in your very soils.

To the untrained eye they look like foggy rocks, pulled up out of the mud. These precious stones would ignite conflict, soon to be covered in blood.

They were traded for money and weapons which were used to fund a war. It’s my animosity towards the degrading and destruction of others for profit that I simply deplore.

About Lazarus_of_Montserrado

Lazarus (Hebrew: “God will help”) Siafa was born in Monrovia, Liberia, West Africa. A once abundantly prosperous and promising nation that was crippled by poverty, violence and corruption in the late 80’s to early 90’s due to a Civil War that lasted approximately 14 years. This blog is a collection of thought provoking, spirit lifting and ambition driven poems as well as spoken word written by Lazarus for those who share a similar dream and perception of life. The vision that no matter the obstacle, failure, setback, trial or loss in life that you hold the power to overcome it all. You may have been born to lose but in time can be built to win and God willing can accomplish whatever your heart desires.
